This special one-day conference offer educators ideas and activities on how to use primary sources in social studies to provide local, national, and global perspectives to teaching and learning. The sessions focus on the over 12 million digitized primary source documents available on the Library of Congress web site. Potential session topics include the following:
- Using primary sources to connect the local community to US history
- Literacy in the social studies
- Developing DBQs in US and world history
- Developing web quest to build technology skills and content learning
- Using primary source-base activities for English language learners and students with special needs

The Illinois Council for the Social Studies invites educators to submit original manuscripts for publication
in the Journal of the Illinois Council for the Social Studies (JICSS) during 2009. Submissions may be instructional
methods, curriculum designs, assessments, research, resources, or reviews of value to K-12 teachers and social studies
educators concerned with praxis. Topics addressed should relate to the teaching of history, geography, political science,
economics, or other social sciences. Articles may be four to nine double-spaced pages (1,200 to 2,700 words). Manuscripts
should adhere to the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition) and
should contain a title page bearing the author's name, title, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone number, and a three-
to four-sentence autobiographical sketch for each author. Camera-ready photos, drawings, charts, and other visuals are invited
as needed for JICSS. Permissions are the author's sole responsibility. All articles will be subjected to blind review.
The deadline for receipt of manuscripts is May 1 of each year. Manuscripts will be promptly acknowledged and reviewed. Please
send one hard-copy version (12-point font preferred) of your article, plus a CD with a formatted Microsoft Word version of the
manuscript to Jason Stacy. Contact Jason via e-mail if you have questions or are interested in submitting manuscripts electronically.

The Illinois Council for the Social Studies (ICSS) was founded in 1938 in order to improve
social studies teaching, to develop the professional interests of social studies instructors,
and to cooperate with other organizations working for a better social understanding in the state,
nation, and world. ICSS provides professional development opportunities, publications, and service
to Illinois teachers. As an affiliate of the National Council for the Social Studies, ICSS is the
professional organization for social educators in Illinois.
