Illinois Council for the Social Studies

Highlights from the 2006 Conference

The theme for the 2006 Conference was Literacy and the American Mind. The Illinois Council for the Social Studies hosted its state conference September 29-30, 2006, at the Hilton in Lisle, Illinois. The conference featured presentations for both the practicing and pre-service social studies teachers. One of our featured speakers was Chad Pregrache, founder and president of Living Lands & Waters. His not-for-profit environmental organization assists with community cleanups, river bottom forest restoration, Mississippi River cleanup a mile at a time, and the cleanup of other rivers in the U.S.

Mr. Memon said Muslims for a Safe America was established after the 2005 London bombings to encourage discussion among American Muslims about Islam and American national security. Conference participants pictured at right discuss positions either in favor or against such issues as whether Muslims should be profiled at airports; when Muslims are required to fight, and against whom; whether Muslims should join the American armed forces; and whether American Muslims should be loyal to America.
